Polly Tells You How To Cull Those Odd Socks!

So far this year my first resolution was to ensure that my bed linen was fresh on New Year's Night, using a technique that makes bed making much easier in terms of time taken and energy expended. I'm going to keep this one up on a more regular basis and pray that I don't wreck my electric underblanket each time!

Sadly this did happen but as we can't afford nearly €100 for a fancy new Imetec electric blanket we're using one we bought for my son when he was living at home. It's still Imetec but it's got just two settings and it's not a patch on the one that broke as it's just too hot to leave on overnight no matter how cold it gets!

For the whole of January I succeeded in changing the bedlinen weekly. February hasn't been quite as successful but the resulting two weekly changes were still lovely! I even picked up a new mattress protector in the sale which went on last week, but the quality is disappointing and we'll be reverting back to the old but expensive quality one at the next change...

I'm also determined to get rid of the backlog of washing; otherwise known as Mount Washmore. I'm a long way towards doing this as all the bedlinen is up to date, including the towels. There's a hillock of woollens tucked away in my laundry basket behind the bedroom door but it's already shrunk considerably.

Jocks n socks are obvious, but are they? It's easy to get the bloody things clean. The problem is finding them; having first crawled around the house on my hands & knees given my son's tend to drop & run, seeking them out like a demented bounty hunter...

My own smalls and hosiery are easy enough to catch up with assuming they aren't black but if they are then they get swallowed by the monster and worn by two fellas whose feet are huge & they total my teeny socks altogether. Shiny socks? No problem. These guys are hard core sock thieves.
At XMas time I had 2 ginormous laundry baskets full to overflowing, one to pair and it seems that the other's full of yet more socks waiting to be washed! So I devised a plan &  a very cunning plan at that...

In order to defeat the sock monster I realised that I just had to pair socks as soon as they come out of the tumble dryer. Also each colour/style of the remainding unpaired socks needed segregating into a separate container before any sorting could take place; so I then had bags of hiking, athletic, shoe liners, black terry, ladies coloured, gents novelty, etc.

This simple act of separating the different types of sock is what made all the difference. With the occasional odd sock turning up in the tumble dried load it's just so much easier to find its partner and be able to put them away together for the first time in years! Bearing this in mind would you believe that it took less than a fortnight to find & put away nearly all of sock mountain?

Okay, so there is the odd one MIA still but I'm hopeful that even these will turn up in the near future. I have taken action to prevent the washing machine from eating or snagging any more of them and that's in the form of big net laundry bags. From several washing baskets worth the sock mountain has shrunk to fill a small shoe box sized storage container. As for the holey, shrunken, stained, worn, chewed or perished elastic? They've all gone in the bin! I'll shortly be ditching any that can't be paired too; I'll give them one month and then they are GONE...

RESULT!
